7-89's damaged engine sends it down.
7-89 is a United Nations Space Command C709 Longsword-class Interceptor of the UNSC Navy.
Background
It was one of the interceptors of the UNSC Frigate Forward Unto Dawn. In 2552, the Forward Unto Dawn was attached to the Sangheilian Fleet in the UNSC/Covenant Seperatist attack on the Ark, creating the Battle of Installation 00.
7-89 was shot down by a Covenant Loyalist Anti-Aircraft Battery and subsequently crashed in the Installation 00 desert near the wall protecting the Cartographer. It is most likely that the pilot of 7-89 was killed in the crash, or was killed by the Covenant troops that were in the area.
Interestingly, though it was shot down, and the cockpit was seemingly unrecognizable, radio chatter could still be heard coming out of the crashed Longsword.
Strangely enough, another Longsword called 7-89 was involved in the Second Battle of Earth. It attempted to assault the Covenant Loyalist Anti-Aircraft Battery positioned in Voi. The fighter flew extremely low over the savanna to avoid being hit by the cannon. Just as it was about to shoot it's target, the AA gun fired a plasma bolt, whose tail struck 7-89 fatally and sent it spinning down the cliffs surrounding the Portal.

It is likely that Bungie used only one model for all Longsword Fighters in Halo 3, just like Echo-419 or Forward Unto Dawn. This would explain two identically named Longsword fighters.
