A battle rifle is a military service weapon that fires a full-power rifle cartridge.  The designation of battle rifle is given to post-World War II select fire infantry rifles such as the H&K G3, the FN FAL or the M14 and to older military bolt-action rifles such as the Mosin Nagant 91/30, Mauser 98, and Springfiel m1903 or to semi-automatic rifles such as the M1 Garand, Tokarev SVT-40, or Gewehr 43.
