Halo Nation Leaving Wikia Voting Thread

This is a voting thread on whether or not Halo Nation should leave Wikia and merge with Halopedia. All voters are encouraged to read through the accompanying blog post in its entirety before casting their votes.

If you are eligible, please vote using one of the following templates:

{{Neutral}} - Neutral
{{Oppose}} - Oppose

You can also comment, by preceeding your post with this template:

In order to vote, you must have registered for an account on Wikia at least two weeks before the vote began on 21/01/2019 (DD/MM/YYYY), and have made 50 contributions to Halo Nation, including at least 25 mainspace edits. Users caught using sockpuppet accounts to cast multiple votes will be banned, and their votes will be discarded.

Although only users meeting these requirements can cast votes, all users are encouraged to comment and discuss on the proceedings. Admins of both Halo Nation and Halopedia will monitor the thread throughout the vote, and would be happy to provide more information and clean up any misconceptions where we can.

The vote will last for a two week period. It will close on the 04/02/2019 (DD/MM/YYYY), at which point the votes will be tallied and if the majority of votes are in favour, then we will begin to set the plans outlined in the above blog into motion.

Support 100%. Even before I went inactive, I started to see Wikia slowly turning into an ad revenue machine. The complete lack of consideration for the communities that used to thrive on their platform is completely disgusting, and ever since the switch to FANDOM branding, it's only gotten worse. FANDOM will continue to push their agenda of nothing other than bringing in as many clicks and as much ad revenue as possible while continuing to ignore the concerns of their users. They truly just don't care. It's a total shitshow. Wikis should be free, independent, and not for commercial gain. Merging with Halopedia is going to be a challenge, but it's a much better alternative to letting Halo Nation slowly rot away on this dying platform. As a former staff member, I'd hate to see that happen.

Comment Hello Halo Alpha, I'm a user who recently forked from the the old RS wiki to our own independant host which involved a lot of planning.

A few months in and we're doing fantastic - top of SEO, having gained endorsement from our game creators and even being funded by them. I just want to let you all know that it's very possible to prosper off of Wikia, and I wish you all the best with this endeavour. But please only do it if your hosts (or if independant, yourselves) have the capability to fend off Wikia's SEO as they are undoubtably good at it.

Although I don't believe I quite meet the voting requirement, I've been a member of this site for over three years now, and I will say that when I first joined the community had a great presence that I greatly enjoyed, and it seems that the community has continued in Discord. This site was the one I relied on as my go-to online Halo bible for lore, but based on what I have read and seen, I think that being a part of Wikia/FANDOM does seem to be doing more detriments to this site. I think merging will allow for a higher degree of quality and control over the lore we can access from a singular site.

Oppose It won't solve the problem of there being two Wikis at all - halo.fandom will remain at the top of search results, and new fans will continue to check here first for information. Kudos to Wikia for removing the Featured Videos, not that I particularly cared about them one way or another.

Halopedia already beats this site as far as reputation, activity, and in some cases SEO. Removal of videos is a just a last ditch band aid attempt to sway the decision and I'd bet money they try to bring them back at some point. This doesn't solve the real problem of Fandom being overly intrusive and apathetic to their communities.

I'd like to add here, FANDOM did not remove videos as a latch ditch attempt to prevent everyone leaving. I know you didn't see the convo spart but that isn't why it was done. They were fully aware it wouldn't stop people the migration but they wanted to remove it for the people who want to stay behind after the migration.

In any case, the motive for removing the videos is irrelevant. They're now gone, which is a good thing overall, no matter how you slice it. However, their removal has also not changed the outcome of the vote, and the merger will still be going ahead, which is, as I understand it, what Fandom were expecting.

Solving the problem of there being two wikis isn't what this is about; it's about moving to a host where the community will have complete control over how the wiki is run, and will not be subject to the frequent intrusive changes which we had little-to-no input on that have become routine over the past few years on Wikia.
