Hello, and welcome to Halo Alpha, a fansite dedicated to the Halo franchise and its fictional universe! Halo Alpha is primarily a wiki with a mission to document every aspect of the Halo series. However, Halo Alpha is also home to a community of likeminded fans, dedicated to building the wiki and making it the best it can be. To that end, the site has many social features available, such as the forums, user blogs, message walls and the Discord server.
About the Wiki
A wiki is a website where users collaborate to create a detailed documentation of a particular topic. The crucial difference between an ordinary encyclopedia and a wiki, however, is that absolutely anyone can view and edit a wiki, for free. In essence, a wiki is simply a specialised online encyclopedia, maintained by fans of its topic.
For instance, the most widely known example of a wiki is Wikipedia. Unlike Wikipedia, however, Halo Alpha exists to specifically document the Halo series and its universe. As a result, all information held within the confines of Halo Alpha is related to Halo, either directly, or peripherally.
Halo Alpha, then known as Halo Wiki, was first founded by the user Akashe on the 15th of June, 2005. On the day following the wiki's creation, Akashe made a total of eleven edits, to the pages "Master chief", "Halo" and to the main page. However, following that, Akashe ceased contributing and the wiki was left mostly deserted and unused.
In mid-2006, a fellow Halo-centric wiki named Halopedia began experiencing difficulties hosting their website. Due to bills in excess of $150 monthly, the wiki's owners could no longer afford to keep the site running. To solve the problem, Halopedia merged into Halo Wiki, because the latter was hosted for free by Wikia (the company now known as FANDOM). Halo Wiki's content was replaced with Halopedia's, and the product of the merger kept the name Halopedia.
The wiki remained as Halopedia same until late 2010, when Wikia announced a mandatory theme change for all wikis. In light of significant opposition to the change, Nicmavr initiated a community vote on whether Halopedia should move back to its old, independent domain, halopedian.com. On October 17th, the vote ended with a majority voting in favour. However, a large amount of users were unwilling to leave, and in addition, Wikia staff did not want to lose such a large wiki.
As a result, the wiki's content was copied to halopedian.com but not removed from halo.wikia.com. In what has come to be known as "the Fork" or "the Split", the remaining users and content on halo.wikia.com became Halo Nation, while those that moved to halopedian.com retained the name Halopedia. Since the split, Halo Alpha has changed very little (outside of theme changes), and its mission remains the same as it always was; to document the Halo franchise to the best of its ability.
While visiting the site, Halo Alpha asks that you follow the rules and policies that are in place here. The rules are designed to ensure that all users can happily and peacefully coexist on the website, as well as to guarantee a minimum level of quality for all content on the wiki.
Although the rules are outlined in much more depth in the policy pages, they can be found summarised here.
Halo Alpha is always on the look-out for new users, as editors are the lifeblood of the wiki. Anyone with an interest in Halo is welcome to join in and work on the wiki. You don't need to make an application or ask permission first; simply make an account, familiarise yourself with the rules and Manual of Style and then get stuck in!
