Kessler is the son of Soren-066 and Laera.
Biography[]
Kessler was born to the defected Spartan Soren-066 and his wife Laera on the planet known as The Rubble. His father was the captain of a ship and pirating crew which brought the family much admiration and respect. Kessler was especially close to a member of Soren's crew named Antares.
Meeting Master Chief[]
Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 arrives on The Rubble looking for answers about a mysterious artifact. Soren brings his old friend home where John meets Kessler, an eager young boy who is also Soren's son. John is surprised as he thought the treatments that the UNSC gives them made it impossible for them to procreate. Soren jabs that he still calls them treatments, though Laera reminds Soren that John might still view them as such. Soren explains that the hormone pellet in the Spartan's back prohibits them from feeling the world fully, experiencing emotions, taste, and even procreation. Once he removed the pellet he experienced the world for the first time. That night, Kessler gives John a stamp of a smiley face as it's his way of saying that they can count on each other.[1]
Things go back to normal for Kessler after Master Chief leaves, with the exception of the boys newfound admiration and idolization of Spartans, especially Master Chief.[2] He finds a toy Spartan helmet and beings wearing it.[3]
Soren's Disappearance[]
Six months later, Kessler befriends Kwan Ha who is hiding in the caves on The Rubble. He brings her food and she tells him tales of a monster. He confides his fears to Soren, who assures him that monsters aren't real.[4] Soren leaves The Rubble for another mission despite Kessler's sadness at him leaving. However, Soren promises to return and Kessler believes him. His father is ultimately betrayed by his crew and captured by UNSC operatives.[5] Laera grows suspicious over her husbands disappearance and gets confirmation of her fears when Kwan reveals that Ruby Ann bought Soren's crew. She advises Laera to get Kessler and leave the planet. The trios attempt to escape is thwarted when Antares closes the hatch. Laera entrusts Kessler into Kwan's custody and surrenders herself to the crew which allows her son to escape. Kwan buys Kessler passage on a transport off the planet using Laera's necklace, but abandons them boy so she can save his mother.[6]
Laera and Soren track the transport ship to Aleria, where they get information from a local shopkeeper. The man, McCoy, shows them records that indicate a 10 year old boy arrived on the ship and is living nearby. The parents ride out to investigate, finding a house inside a fortress owned by two women. The women refuse to give up "their" child and accuse Laera and Soren of being poor parents. The boy was abused and starved when he arrived. Soren barters with the women for the chance to see his son. Laera finds the boy nearby wearing Kessler's helmet, and coaxes him near. She removes his helmet but the boy beneath it is not Kessler. The boy says it was given to him by another boy to protect him. Laera returns to McCoy's and intimidates him into telling the truth about where Kessler is. She tells Soren that the UNSC kidnapped their son.[7]
