After decades of exemplary performance, the UNSC contracted JOTUN to build what they referred to as Mobile Assault, Support, and Recovery Platforms, or "Elephants." The M312, M313, and M318 HRV variants are the most commonly seen across various theatres of war, all bearing unique functional designs which favor specific operations and combat scenarios.

— Description[1]
The M318 Heavy Recovery Vehicle, also known as the Elephant, was a vehicle in use by the UNSC. It was designed and manufactured by JOTUN Heavy Industries. Heavy Recovery Vehicles such as the M318 Elephant have their origins in utility and farming equipment produced by JOTUN, which performed exceptionally well. This prompted the UNSC to contract JOTUN to produce military hardware such as the M318.[1]
