The Maugen-Pattern Armored Cruiser or RCS-Class Armored Cruiser[1] was a capital warship classification within the Covenant Navy, and later in service with various Covenant remnants.[4]

Design[]

Developed when shielding technology was far more limited, the Maugen-pattern cruisers lack the firepower or robustness of its younger cousins, but its reliability and simplicity of operation proved important in the years after the Great Schism. In particular, the loss of many important Covenant naval depots, skilled shipmasters, and Huragok technicians made other cruisers difficult to maintain and crew. As Covenant warlords began to consolidate their splintered fleets the Maugen served when others could not, their ancient hulls bathed once more in burning lances of light and sheets of plasma.[4]

Classification[]

Covenant[]

The Advocate-class serves as the core of the Covenant fleets, they were frontline warships who carried out their orders without question.[7]

UNSC[]

The 3-letter code was used by the UNSC to classify Covenant ships, The "R" ("Reverence") refers to vessels who can conduct missions related to reconnaissance and possible excavation of Forerunner artifacts. The "C" could mean "Compliance" which indicates it is a frontline warship that can be sent out in large number to conduct their missions.[8] The "S" ("Salvation") denotes that this is a dedicated warship capable of cleansing the enemies of the Covenant with holy fire.[9]

Operational History[]

Covenant Era[]

Sailing the stars when humanity was just making its first long-distance ocean voyages, the armored cruiser served as the empire's foremost missionary and compliance warship for centuries, until it was eventually supplanted by the more refined battlecruiser patterns of latter years. Its ensuing obsolescence led to many being churned into feedstock for Assembly Forges, reformed and remade into new ships, vehicles, and armor; while others were shamefully allocated to menial roles among reserve fleets or simply mothballed near important colonies.[4][3]

Post-War Era[]

When the Covenant unexpectedly fell, ambitious personalities resurrected these titans to serve a new purpose. The Great Schism saw the loss of many of the assets needed to maintain the newer Covenant cruisers. As such, the Maugen-pattern began to see a resurgence in mainline usage due to its simplicity of operation.[4]

Many warlords began to incorporate the Maugen-pattern.[4] At least two of these vessels were used by Jul 'Mdama's Covenant during the Second Battle of Requiem. One was destroyed upon the arrival of UNSC Infinity.[5] One other escaped as Requiem was forced into its sun.[10]
