“Victory is secured, not from the throne, but from the front lines.”
— Sangheili General mantra[5]

Sangheili General was a Sangheili rank in the Covenant Empire and Jul 'Mdama's Covenant. Originally a part of the Field Command of Occupational Forces, they were one of the highest-ranking military personnel within the Covenant's ground forces. They managed ground-side operations, commanding large numbers of troops both on and off the battlefield. Lethal in command and combat, they were clad in distinct golden armor and sported strong personal energy shields. Depending on the nature of an operation, they could be directly subservient to a fleet's Supreme Commander.

Sangheili Generals served the Covenant Empire during the Human-Covenant war against the United Nations Space Command. In 2552, numerous Generals were deployed to the inner colony world of Reach to partake in a colossal invasion. Their operations began in the Viery Territory but later spread across the entirety of the planet. After the war, the rank appeared within Jul 'Mdama's remnant faction. A boss construct based on this information was used in the UNSC's War Games simulations.

Description[]

HReach - Sangheili General

A Sangheili General, wielding a Type-50 Concussion Rifle.

Sangheili Generals were one of the highest-ranking military personnel among the Covenant Empire's ground forces. When the direct occupation of an enemy's territory was necessary, Generals were tasked with managing ground operations. They commanded hundreds or even thousands of troops, either from afar or by personally leading them into battle. Although they specialized in command, they were also particularly lethal in combat. Multiple Generals were required during some campaigns and as such, each would work in concert with one another to handle individual conflicts wherever they cropped up.[3]

Generals could also act as shipmasters, as seen with Ardo 'Moretumee's command of the Ardent Prayer.[4] Their decision to invade enemy worlds usually came from a desire to recover any Forerunner artifacts that may have resided there. Generals could report directly to a Zealot,[6] Field Marshal or even a fleet's Supreme Commander, depending on the nature of a given military operation.[3]

History[]

Sangheili Generals served the Covenant Empire during the Human-Covenant war against the United Nations Space Command.[1] A part of the Covenant's ground-side troops, they operated within the Field Command of Occupational Forces.[3] In 2552, Generals were deployed by the Covenant to the inner colony world of Reach during its fall.[1] They began by coordinating their military efforts across the Viery Territory, before eventually encompassing the entire planet.[3] Ardo 'Moretumee, shipmaster of the Ardent Prayer, was a Sangheili General who was killed by a UNSC strike team during Operation: UPPER CUT.[4]

Following the Great Schism and subsequent conclusion of the Human-Covenant war, the rank of Sangheili General resurfaced within Jul 'Mdama's Covenant. This information was utilized in the UNSC's War Games simulations to create a boss construct in the March on Stormbreak scenario.[2]

Equipment[]

Sangheili Generals who served the Covenant were equipped with heavily augmented,[3] golden[1] armor that boasted enhanced shielding and a distinct command helmet.[3] Their weapons were described as formidable[3] and they wielded a variety of Covenant armaments.[1] Meanwhile, Generals who served 'Mdama's Covenant wore a crimson variant of the Sangheili Warrior harness.[2]

Gameplay[]

Halo: Reach[]

A BOB wearing General armor on the mission Sword Base.

Sangheili Generals appear in Halo: Reach as enemies in the game's Campaign and Firefight modes.[1] They act as the Sangheili equivalent to Jiralhanae Chieftains[3] and are the strongest Sangheili players can encounter in Firefight.[7] True to their namesake, they are often found overseeing important tactical locations or leading large groups of soldiers into battle. As high-ranking Sangheili enemies, their shields are strong and they often utilize powerful weapons in combat. They make use of ranged weaponry such as Type-33 Fuel Rod Guns, Type-52 Plasma Launchers, Type-25 Plasma Rifles and Type-50 Concussion Rifles. Some opt for a more close-quarters approach and will aggressively rush the player with a Type-1 Energy Sword drawn. They also use Type-1 plasma grenades and Armor Lock.[1] A BOB has a chance to spawn in General armor on the mission Sword Base.[8]

The best defense against Generals is distance. The Noob Combo is an effective way for players to deal with Generals at range, as the plasma pistol will drop any Sangheili's shields in one hit. This is recommended at medium to long range and can be a lifesaver when a sword-wielding General charges at players. On LASO, it is recommended that players use a barrage of plasma pistol bolts as opposed to one charged bolt. A less effective method would be to attempt an assassination in a close-quarters fight. Like other Sangheili enemies, Generals have a chance to roar in rage, especially after losing their shields. This is risky however, as Generals sometimes arm themselves with energy swords. In Halo: Reach, the melee speed of a sword-wielding Sangheili has been significantly increased from Halo 2 so dodging their swings is much more difficult.[1]

The armor of Sangheili Generals is available as an armor permutation in the game's Armory, available for Sangheili customization. In classic Halo: Reach, the armor is available if the player reaches the rank of Major.[5] In Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the armor can be unlocked at Season 1's Tier 65 alongside the Heart Attack armor effect.[9]

Halo 5: Guardians[]

A Sangheili General appears in Halo 5: Guardians as a boss in Warzone on the map March on Stormbreak. He spawns at the Cargo Dock at the 2 minute mark and is armed with a Type-58 Fuel Rod Cannon. Killing him awards players the Boss Takedown medal.[2]
