The Knowing was a Forerunner AI that served on the planet Ariel. There's also one located in the multiplayer level "Cold Storage". Knowing was set deep down in a complex beneath one of Ariel's cities.
During the planet's invasion, ODSTs Dutch and Romeo found the Knowing. When it revealed that the Covenant utilizing it against the human race would lead to their destruction down to the last human DNA strand, the ODSTs had the Knowing self-destruct itself before the Covenant could reach it. Its destruction gave cause for the Covenant to leave Ariel.
