UNSC Io was a Marathon-class heavy cruiser in service with the UNSC Navy during the Human-Covenant war.
Background[]
It was heavily damaged during an engagement in the 18 Scorpii system, where it and two other ships were saved by the timely arrival of the frigate Bellicose and other Insurrectionist ships. Afterward, Admiral Cole deemed that the cruiser was damaged beyond repair and intended to follow the recommendation of a Captain Wren to use it as a decoy.
The ship was at the Battle of Psi Serpentis and destroyed. Later speculation indicated that Admiral Cole may have used the ship as a decoy, sending it into the super-gas giant Viperidae and detonating its already fatally-damaged engines to ignite the planet into a brown dwarf star, in order to destroy a pursuing fleet of 300 Covenant vessels, and to convince both the Covenant and the UNSC that he was killed during the action when he may have in fact escaped.[1]
