The Mona Lisa Incident (rewriting)Edit

1Edit

“Do they eat their own, cause that's what it looks like.”
— Burgundy
Some time after the destruction of Installation 04, UNSC Red Horse was sent to investigate the debris of the ring orbiting Threshold. Although sent by the Office of Naval Intelligence themselves, their orders were very vague, with the only instructions being to investigate the debris for something. While searching the debris field, the Prowler intercepted an escape pod drifting in orbit. Once secured in the cargo bay, a squad of marines led by Sergeant Zhao Heng Lopez were sent to take a look. Upon inspection, they discovered a human survivor that was still alive but bleeding badly with a massive cut in his torso. The marines also found out that he is an escaped prisoner from a civilian prison ship called the Mona Lisa, but before he could say anymore, the prisoner died from blood loss. Moments later, Sgt Lopez is summoned to the meeting room by their commander, Tobias Foucault, to discuss her next mission with the ship's A.I. Rebecca being present. Rebecca explains that the Mona Lisa is a civilian prison ship meant to transport prisoners from colony to colony, and it was only detected then because of the debris field. They believe it to be strange that a civilian prison ship like the Mona Lisa, had appeared in one of the most classified locations ever established by ONI and the UNSC. After the meeting, Sgt Lopez and her team were dispatched to the ship to investigate via pelican. When they made it to the ship, Sgt Lopez introduced each of the marines to each other and Rebecca informed them that a Covenant capital ship had been spotted from a long distance. However, she states that the ship is clueless but advises them to tread carefully to remain undetected.

1rEdit

Sometime after the destruction of Installation 04, the UNSC Red Horse was sent to investigate the remains of the ring. Despite being sent by the Office of Naval Intelligence, the ship's orders were only to investigate the debris. During the search of the debris field, the ship intercepted and secured an escape pod. The survivor within the pod died from blood loss, but not before revealing that he was an escaped prisoner from the Mona Lisa, a civilian prison ship.

The Red Horse's commander, Tobias Foucault, explained to Sergeant Lopez, a member of the Marine detachment on the ship, that it was extremely strange that a civilian ship could be in such a classified location. Lopez and her team were then dispatched to investigate the Mona Lisa. When the group arrived at the ship, they are informed by Rebecca, the Red Horse's A.I., that a Covenant capital ship had been spotted, but was unaware of the UNSC's presence.

2Edit

Once the group board the ship's dark cargo bay, they encountered unarmed naked elites hiding and running, so the marines began to open fire, slaughtering any elite that tried to flee. One of the Marines, Benti notices an elite hiding in behind a cargo crate. They both made eye contact as she drew her weapon, and the elite turns and points to the hallway that leads into the ship, right as Sgt Lopez killed it. Once the elites are dead, the marines start assessing the situation. They notice that there are no signs of human life, no prisoners or crew members. What also confuses them is that the elites don't have any weaopons, armor or any gear of that matter. However, Sgt Lopez notices that their squadmate Rabbit is missing. So Sgt Lopez orders Cranker to stay behind and watch their pilot Burgundy while the rest go to find Rabbit. As they walk deep into the hallway, they see lot's of blood for a few people to have bled out, but didn't see any bodies, firearms or plasma burns. As they reach the end of the hallway, they here noices coming from a storage room, so they enter. They find an elite stomping on the bloody corpse of Rabbit, out of rage they open fire until the elite is nothing but a bloody pulp. Keeping watch outside, Benti notices two figures run by the hallway towards the cargo bay. Sgt Lopez asks what'd she see and says she thinks she saw what looked like elites but wasn't sure if they were armed, so Sgt Lopez warns Cranker to be ready. As Sgt Lopez reaches for Rabbit's dog tags, they notice an odd tenticle like growth in her corpse. Before they can examine any further, a loud screech can be heard from the distance. Sgt Lopez radios Cranker and says "Cranker, talk to me.", to which he responds "Covies never showed Sarge, wait. MY GOD!" while a growl can be heard in the comms. Worried about him, Sgt Lopez responds with "Cranker, call it out!", but Cranker is overwhelmed by something and screams "Oh god... ahhh, AAAAAHHHHHHHH!" and the radio goes silent. As he goes silent, gunshots can be heard from the distance, but then they stop. Burgundy scans the area for cranker using the pelican cameras, but says "Sarge, i'm not sure what i'm seeing. It's too dark, and Cranker's flashlight is just lying on the floor." (She meant his assult rifle with the light on). As she switches camera feeds, she see's one of the elite corpses get dragged down the hall. She says "Oh shit, Sarge something just dragged one of the Covie corpses down the hall!". Sgt Lopez says "Something, but what?", to which Burgundy replies with "Something big, something really big. Do they eat their own, because that's what it looks like!". After she fails to find Cranker, the Rebecca radios in to contact the marines, to which Burgundy patches to Sgt Lopez. She informs Rebecca of the situation regarding the presence of naked unarmed elites on board, the lack of human presence and that one marine is KIA and another missing possible KIA. She requests the Red Horse for reinforcements to aid with their mission, but Fucault denies her request. Believing that the Mona Lisa has been comprimised by the Covenant, Fucault orders them to initiate the Cole Protocol, meaning they must destroy the ship's nav data and protect Earth's location from the Covenant. As the orders are given, they start breaking up and are left radio silent.

2rEdit

Once the group boarded the Mona Lisa, the encountered a group of naked Elites in the cargo bay, who the marines killed, although they are confused by the strange lack of equipment on the Elites. The Marines assesed the area, finding no signs of human life. Lopez suddenly noticed that Rabbit, a member of their squad, had disappeared. The sergeant ordered another marine, Cranker, along with their pilot, Burgundy, to stay behind while they searched for Rabbit. The group proceeded down the hallway, which is splattered with blood, although there were no plasma marks or bodies.

They found Rabbit, dead, being beaten by another Elite, who they killed. A Marine named Benti saw two figures run past the hallway towards the cargo bay. Lopez warned Cranker and Burgundy, before she noticed a strange growth on Rabbit's body. Suddenly, they heard a screech, and Lopez radioed Cranker, who screamed and goes silent.

Burgundy searched the cargo bay for Cranker from within the Pelican, but only saw his assault rifle's flashlight in the dark. She then noticed one of the Elite corpses being dragged off, and was contacted by Rebecca, who she patched through to Lopez. Lopez requested reinforcements, but Foucault denied who request, instead ordering Lopez to initiate the Cole Protocol and destroy the Mona Lisa's nav data, before their communication broke up.

3Edit

Sgt Lopez explains to her squad that killing the nav systems is now their primary objective and assertaining what's going on is a secondary objective, after explaining the mission she orders Burgundy to seal up the Pelican, keep an eye out for Cranker and splits her squad into two teams. Benti is paird with ClaranceOrlavGersten and Tsardikos to kill the nav system's back up in the engine room while Sgt Lopez takes MacCrawSingh and Mahmoud to the main nav system in the bridge, once the orders a clear they fall out. As Benti's team make their way to their objective, the reach a locked door. They try to stomp it open, they hear the screaching noice from the distance again, but assume it's just the ship and nothing more. Sgt Lopez's team makes a stop in the med bay to treat a wound MacCraw had sustained in the cargo bay, when they notice a locked safe room. They call out to see if anyone is inside and hear a man asking them if they're are really UNCS. After much persuacion from Sgt Lopez, the door opens to find a grey haired man in a doctor's uniform with a pistol drawed to them. He lowers his weapon and identifies himself as Dr John Smith, chief medical officer of the Mona Lisa. Once the marines secure the room, Sgt Lopez begins to interrogate Smith with questions. She asks him what happened to the ship, his respnse is that the prisoners overwhelmed the guards and took over the ship, and locked himself in the saferoom as it happened. However, Sgt Lopez wasn't buying it, seeing that he's the only human survivor they've found so far. She asks them why is the Mona Lisa carrying Covenant prisoners, but Smith claims he has no idea why. Sgt Lopez then finally asks him what's the ship doing "here" (in a classified location), but of course Smith has no knowledge of that either. After some interrogation, she explains that they're going to the bridge to kill the nav system, but Smith reluctantly says that they need to get off the ship immediately, but Sgt Lopez draws Smith's pistol on him and tells him that leaving is not an option.

3rEdit

After relaying the commander's orders, Lopez ordered Burgundy to remain in the Pelican and keep an eye out for Cranker. She then split the group into two squads, sending five marines, lead by Benti, to the engine room to clear the backup nav system while Lopez headed to the bridge with a few other marines to clear the primary nav systems.

Lopez's group made a brief stop in a med bay to treat a wound one of the Marines had sustained earlier. The squad noticed a locked safe room, and after some persuasion, convinced the room's occupant, Dr. John Smith, to come out. Lopez asked him what happened to the ship and doubts his explanation that the prisoners escaped and overwhelmed the guards. She then asked him why there are Covenant prisoners on the ship, but Smith claimed to have no idea why. Lopez finally asked what the ship is doing there, but Smith had no knowledge of the reason. After she had finished questioning him, Lopez informed Smith that the group is headed to the bridge to delete the ship's nav data. Smith said they need to leave the ship immediately, but Lopez forced him to join the group as they continue their mission.

4Edit

As all this is happening, Burgendy was back in the hanger in the pelican waiting for Cranker. As she monitors the camera feeds, she sees a figure walk out of the hallway and realizes that it's Cranker. Relived, she grabs an assult rifle, opens the pelican door and tells him to get in. However she notices something wrong with him as she hears weird groaning from him, notices blood all over his face and sees his eyes roll back. Before she can determine anything else, he knocks her down on the floor and stabs her right shin with some kind of big crab like claw. She fires her weapon at him but is then dragged away.

4rEdit

Meanwhile, Burgundy remained in the hangar waiting for Cranker. At some point she sees Cranker emerge from the hallway. She proceeded to open the Pelican's door to greet him before noticing that he is covered and blood and groaning strangely. Before she can react, he knocked her to the ground with a claw and drags her away.

5Edit

Benti's team manage to find a mantinence shaft that leads to the recycling plant. Once the shaft is open, they hop down in the partially flooded tunnel and make their way to the objective. Because there are a lot of places to hide, they move extra carefully. As they make their way, they hear odd groaning and growling noices in the distance. However they hear lot's of running footsteps and see shadowy figures chasing them, so they start running. They keep running until they reach a junction leading to a maintenance storage room. They turn to see what's pursuing them, only to find a horde of flood ready to pounce them, something they've never seen before.

5rEdit

Benti's team found a maintenance shaft the leads to the recycling plant. The group proceeded through the shaft, hearing groaning and growling in the distance. They then spotted a group of figures chasing them, so they fled until they reached a junction. The group turns around to face their pursuers, a swarm of fleshy, twisted monsters - Flood.

6Edit

Sgt Lopez and her team reach a cafeteria room and find what looks like the mutilated body of a prisoner, but the torso is pried open and there are odd growths in it's right arm and other parts of the body. MacCraw says "Sarge, what the hell is that?!", "Well MacCraw, that there's a hand." she says. "No, I mean what the hell is "that"?" he responds. Sensing skeptism in all this, Sgt Lopez turns to Smith and says "John, can I call you John?". She grabs him by the shirt, points at the corpse and says "I think you know what this shit is, and I think you're gonna damn well tell me what it is!".

6r (6+8)Edit

Lopez and her team had reached a cafeteria and found a mutilated corpse. A marine asked Lopez what it was, and she responded by asking Smith if he knew what it was. He said that it was a virus from one of the Elites. He also stated that it pushed the infected into crazed aggression.

7Edit

Back to Benti's team, the marines are firing at the flood combat forms but realize that they're not staying down and don't seem to flinch. Realizing that there's too many of them, Benti orders everyone to fall back to the maintenece room as she tosses a frag grenade. The grenade goes off and brings down derbis on the flood, but the marines are knocked back by the explosion, water starts flooding in and Tsardikos is killed from the explosion. The rest of the marines seem okay, but a flood combat form rises from the water and slices Orlav in the back. Benti fires at the combat form and kills it before it can do more harm. Benti chacks Orlav's wound and see's a maggot like parasite inside, so she cuts it out with a knife. She and Gersten pick her up and carry her to the maintenece room door with Clarance and put her on the floor. As Benti tries to get the door open, Gersten notices Orlav's eyes rolling back and her facial veins turning dark yellow.

7rEdit

Benti and her team opened fire on the Flood forms, but quickly noticed their fire was largely ineffective. Benti ordered the group to fall back into a room while she threw a grenade into the shaft, which crushed the Flood forms but also killed a Marine, as well as partially flooded the room.

A Combat Form rose from the water and slashed another Marine before Benti killed it. While examining the wound she noticed and cut out a small maggot-like thing. The goup carried the wounded Marine onward, but Gersten, another marine, notices the wounded soldier worsening

8Edit

Back at the cafeteria, Sgt Lopez asks Smith what is the cause of the deformed corpse. He explains that it came from  some of the elites that got sick from an alien virus. The virus made them aggressive and savage, so anyone displaying these symptoms were kept in strict isolation. Singh asks Smith if the virus jumped says it did.

9Edit

Back at the recycling plant, Orlav's body jumps out of the ground, jumps to Gersten and bites the right side of his face. Betni tries to pull her away, but flood growths pop out of Orlav's right arm, knocking Benti away. Clarance quickly fires his rifle at Orlav and unloads a magnum on her, putting her down perminantly. After she's dead, Benti resumes getting the door open, but sees that Gersten's face is bleeding bad. They turn around to see the flood digging their way out of the debris, so Benti tries to hurry. Luckily the door opens and the water pulls in the remaining marines. Once they shut the door, the water flushes out and they're on the floor. However, they look up to see a naked elite holding a cricket bat.

9rEdit

As Benti's group continued onward, the wounded Marine suddenly attacked the group, biting Gersten before being killed by another Marine, Clarence. The group hurried onward and reached the next room, where the find a naked Elite with a cricket bat.

10Edit

Back to the cafeteria, Sgt Lopez draws her weapon on Smith as her suspicions of him grow. So she orders Mahmoud to open the next door but it's locked, so she tells Smith to open it. As the door opens, a massive flood creature walks in, grabs Mahmoud with its tentacles and tries to drag him in. The marines open fire and try to force the creature back inside. Sgt Lopez shuts the door on the tenticle holding onto Mahmoud and shoots it. Enraged, she turns around and punches Smith in the jaw, knocking him to the ground.

10rEdit

11Edit

Meanwhile, Benti's team is ready to open fire on the elite until a human prisoner comes in and begs them not to. He tells them he's not infected, but Benti asks why should they care if he's infected or not. The prisoner frantically tells them he's the only one he's had to talk to, that he's cool and that it's not the Covenant's fault this time. Benti agrees to let him live as long as it doesn't try anything or look at them the wrong way. The prisoner reveals himself to be Patrick Rimmer, and that Henry is a friendly elite that even though they don't understand each other, they've established a comrade like relation ship. Rimmer asks Benti if they're gonna get them off the ship, but Benti demands from him an explanation for what was it that attacked them. Before Rimmer can answer, looks at Gersten and realizes that he is infected, so Clarance draws his rifle and shoots him in the head. Benti tells Clarance to retrieve his tags, but Rimmer tells her that he's not dead enough and that they have to rip the body up or he'll come back. Confused and angry, she tells him he's dead and draws her rifle on Rimmer and Henry. However, Gersten gets back up and gets ready to kill her, but Clarance move her out of the way, draws his pistol and fires mutliple rounds into Gersten. Realizing that they're no longer safe, they make their way out of the maintenece room. But before they leave, RImmer says that "the flood got out" and that no one is in charge of the ship, not anymore.

11rEdit

12Edit

Back to Sgt Lopez, she says to Smith "You know what that thing was you lying son of a bitch. Virus my ass!". She orders Mahmoud to search Smith and even check his body cavities if he has to. As he searches Smith, Mahmoud finds an ID card smith was carrying, and what it read made everything that's been happening perfect Sense. It turns Smith's ID card revealed that he was an ONI Major and a scientist for research and development working for Section 3, the most secretive division of ONI. Section 3 are responsible for creating the Spartan II program and aquiring alien technilogy for research and development. Now revealed as Major John Smith, he orders Sgt Lopez to abonden ship and destroy the Mona Lisa from a safe distance, seeing as he outranks Sgt Lopez. But she denies his orders since she has soldiers on the ship she can't contact, but Smith tells her that there will be casualties in this war. This makes her furious and puches Smith again. She tells him and her team that they're going to the bridge and will not abandon any soldier.

12rEdit

13Edit

Meanwhile on the Red Horse, Commander Foucault tells Rebecca to order a marine squad to prep a pelican to go to the Mona Lisa as back up for Sgt Lopez's squad. Rebecca tells the commander that their orders state that if a recon or a loss of recon indicates that the Mona Lisa is comprimised beyond retrival, then they must destroy it regardless of passangers. Foucault reassures her that he is aware of his orders but he has not been granted any infromation to asses the situation to who or what has comprimised the Mona Lisa. Rebecca tells him Covenant no doubt, but Foucault doesn't buy it, since he knows that the Sergant and her marines are more than capable of dealing with a Covenant attack, but he feels like something else is at play. He tells her that he's aware that she's hiding something and suspects she will not tell him. Finally ready to cooperate, Rebecca tells the commander to meet him somewhere private, because she has something to show him, something he won't want his crew to see.

13rEdit

14Edit

Back at the Mona Lisa, a group of Flood are moving through a hallway, with them is Burgundy being carried by Cranker, who has been infected by the Flood. She begs him to put her down and that she can find the Sarge, but Cranker doesn't listen as they keep taking her away.

14rEdit

15Edit

As Sgt Lopez and her team are making their way to the bridge, she asks Smith about the virus, he tells her that it's not a virus, but more like an infestation. It came with one of the Covenant prisoners and it just spread as the flood took over bodies. He explains that their insect looking infection forms get under a person's skin, making them a host. Once the host has been assimilated, they transform into a cellular level, mutating into a weapon. Anyone infected by the Flood are difficult to stop, don't register pain, don't need all organs functioning and are fueled by rage. Even when disabled, they are extremely dangerous. Smith stops them as they reach a hallway with a consealed door. He opens it and enter a lab that leads to the bridge. They look around and see the that whole lab is a mess. Sgt Lopez asks Smith what were they doing, he responds by saying research and development. He explains that they came up with interesting data to maximize damage inflicted to the Covenant. It turns out that they've developed a resistance to plasma, and were planning on using the Flood to conter that. Sgt Lopez asks him what about his flood, to which he says this: "The flood is pure of intent
